A winning team doesn’t simply perform on race-day. For every mile of racing
there are thousands of miles spent pounding the tarmac on test circuits. Whether
it’s letting the driver’s get used to the car or exhaustively testing the new
brake components, testing is a vital part of the motorsport world. And because
it’s so important, you might as well do it in style.
Before the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains lies the Guadix
Circuit – a popular site for research and development of some of the most successful
racing teams in motorsport. And now it’s just got even better.
After buying a majority control of the shares to Guadix circuit, headed by Clive
Greenhalgh, Guadix has undergone some dramatic changes. With two track layouts
of approximately 3km each, and a good mix of fast, slow and multiple corners,
Guadix is one of the best circuits in Europe for one-to-one coaching.
Consistent coverage of the track in highest-quality medium abrasion tarmac allows
for more accurate comparison testing, while FIA approved concrete curbs and
extended run-off areas increases safety with minimal damage to test cars and
bikes. The new circuit has already achieved rave reviews with Aston Martin (pictured),
Triumph UK, Mitjet Motorsport and Barwell Motorsport – testing a wide range
of vehicles from bikes to GT3 and GT1 cars.
Aston Martin works driver Darren Turner said of the track: ‘it’s much better
than I expected. I really like the track and we achieved all of our testing
aims,’ while Triumph UK said: ‘we were extremely happy with the new track and
our test results – we’ll definitely be back in March.’
The secret to successful testing doesn’t just lay with the track, however. Works
drivers, engineers and technicians all need to be as relaxed and rested as possible
to maintain focus. As a result, a great deal of care and attention has been
spent on improving the the facilities. 10 fully enclosed pits and 15 outer pits
(with sunshields), secure privacy and night-time use of pits are all available.
Six minutes away from the track is the excellent Hotel Villa de Gor, with bar,
banqueting room and conference/briefing room facilities – and a discounted rate
is available for Guadix visitors. The circuit is also used frequently for track
days.
